Are Personal Brands Protected on Social Networks - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke with Larry Magid, who has been in the media for years and has published various books on internet safety. In this interview, we focus on the importance of protecting our online identities on social networks. Im not much of a fan of MySpace, but if youre on that social network, pay very close attention to this post. Larry, are social networks safe for anyone these days? I just read an article about how a woman was putting up bad Facebook status messages about her husband and he found out and murdered her? Will it ever be safe again? Social networks are safe unless you put dangerous things on them. Considering how many people use such networks there are relatively few problems. The example you give is between spouses who obviously know each other from the real world thats where violence happens, not online. Like any powerful tool there are ways to misuse social networks. The good news is that most people including the vast majority of teens use them pretty responsibly. What examples do you have of people losing their identities or personal attacks on MySpace? There are examples of people attacking each other on MySpace just there are in any venue. As per ID theft, I dont know of cases but if you put confidential information such as a social security # or credit card # on your profile, you certainly run the risk of ID theft. There is also the risk of impersonation that can happen if you are careless about your password or if someone sets up a bogus profile in your name. It happens but when reported, MySpace investigates and usually takes them down promptly. Would you recommend that someone joins MySpace over Facebook and why? MySpace and Facebook serve somewhat different purposes. MySpace is more of a place to promote and reach out, Facebook is a social utility. Both have their value and many people use both. How are children using social networks? [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwYTjgdbc7Y] Children under 13 shouldnt be using social networks unless theyre walled gardens with parental controls. Teens are using social network in many ways to keep in touch with friends, explore hobbies and sport interests, keep up with what theyre friends are doing, extend their educational reach and, of course, show off a bit . What are some positive aspects to social networking sites? There are many positive aspects of social networking. They encourage media literacy, activism and help people socialize. They expand your reach and help you stay in touch with friends and family members. They can break down isolation and can help people deal with problems such as health issues, substance abuse and even suicidal risk. I think that advantages of social networks far outweigh the few dangers. How to Train Your Memory for Better Problem-Solving Abilities When you’re presented with a particularly thorny challenge at work, “think outside the box” is a common piece of advice. But figuring out how to do that can be nearly as tough as figuring out the answer you’re seeking in the first place. Now, science offers a solution to help anyone tap into their creative thought process to solve problems. “Having individuals think back on a recent experience in a very detailed way, reflecting on the people, setting, and actions of the experience,” is the key to unlocking creative problem solving, says Kevin Madore, a psychology Ph.D candidate at Harvard University and the lead author of a new study in Psychological Science that looks at how “episodic memory,” as the researchers call it, contributes to a person’s creative problem-solving ability. In a series of experiments, subjects watched a short video and then were interviewed with the purpose of getting them to remember as many small details about the video as they possibly could. Those subjects did a better job than a control group in the second part of the experiment, in which they were told to think of unusual uses for common household objects like newspaper or a bedsheet. Madore calls the process of mentally re-creating a scene or an activity “event building.” It’s a process that’s similar to coming up with a creative solution to a problem, because in both cases, you need to fill in lots of details, and get them in the proper place and the right order. “Priming individuals to be in [that] specific frame of mind… seems to assist them on creativity tasks that also may rely on event building,” Madore says. Although the study’s experiments took place in a lab setting, Madore says it’s possible to train yourself to practice episodic memory in order to unlock your hidden creativity. Treat your brain like a recording device, taking down even the most minute details. Be as specific as you can in your recollection, Madore advises. “What color hair did the people have? What was the layout of the main setting? What order were the actions performed in? How were the actions performed? Thinking on a microscopic level and using focused mental imagery… can be helpful,” he says. Doing this puts you in a detail-oriented frame of mind, which means that small elements that might have escaped your noticeâ€"and could be the key to a creative solution to your particular problemâ€"capture your attention and become accessible to you. It doesn’t matter what kind of memory you think about, as long as it’s one you can recall in vivid detail. “It seems that any sort of recollection or memory that people can think about in great detail should be helpful,” Madore says. So, without further ado, here are the three universal laws - starting with... Law #1: You Get Out What You Put In On the ice, I got direct and instant feedback based on my efforts. If I skated hard, played smart, and tried my best, then I’d score goals and help win games. If I was lazy and unfocused, then I would make mistakes and hurt the team. There was no confusion about the cause of the problem and no one else to blame. I was directly accountable for my results, and I was the only one who could change them. In life and our careers, we don’t always get feedback as quickly as in a game, and that’s why it’s even more important to understand and accept this law in the ‘real world’... … Because realizing you despise what your life has become after 5, 10, or 20 years in the workforce is a pretty ugly wake up call… And if the reason for those results is that you didn’t put in your best effort, then you have no one to blame but yourself. So, ask yourself at the end of each and every day, is what I’m putting in going to give me the results I want? You get out what you put in, so it’s all up to you. Law #2: You Get What You Believe You’re Worth Feel like you’re not paid enough? Or maybe that you deserve a better job? Well, here’s a law I learned after getting my heart broken as a young man… and it goes like this: If you truly believe with every fiber of your being that you deserve true love, then you’ll get it. If you feel you’re not good enough, then you won’t. If you believe you deserve to earn $50k - or $100k a year, then that’s what you’ll make, and if you believe you’re worthy of a great job that treats you well, then that’s what you’ll get. See, if you truly believed that you should have a result you desire right now, then that would already be your reality. If that’s not your reality, then one reason could be that you don’t believe you deserve it quite yet. Maybe you just need to work at it more, or maybe - based on your upbringing - you don’t even think it’s possible for someone like you. Either way, spending time with and learning from people who are getting the results you want is a great way to close the gap quicker and get what you want. Law #3: The Law Of Specificity Now here’s a law you can have a bit more fun with… because it’s as simple as this: The more specific you can get about exactly what you want in life, the faster you’ll get it. So, have some fun dreaming and scheming about what you want in your career and your life - and get specific! What color car do you want? What type of characteristics does your dream partner have? What kind of income do you want, and what type of job suits you best? So, remember the three universal laws if you’re looking to get what you want: you get out what you put in, you get what you believe you’re worth, and you’ve got to get specific about what you want.
